The West Virginia Botanic Garden, Inc. (WVBG) has received a $20,000 grant from the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust of San Francisco, California. The grant, announced on November 24th, will fund the installation of insulation and drywall in the Education Center and the purchase of cabinets and countertops in the Center and adjoining kitchen area, both of which are on the lower level of the new Welcome Center now under construction at the Garden. Last year the WVBG also received $20,000 in grant funds from the Trust to help purchase furniture and equipment for the Welcome Center and to sponsor a green roof demonstration garden there.
The Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust, created in 1970, supports education and research in ornamental horticulture, primarily in North and South America. Funding is usually granted to botanical gardens, arboreta, universities, and other nonprofit charitable organizations. Grants are awarded for up to $20,000 for a one-year funding cycle. The WVBG is extremely grateful for the generosity of the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust in assisting the organization in getting the WVBG’s first building ready to welcome visitors in the spring.
